The Golf Channel has decided to go Discovery Channel on us and declared this Tiger Week. While I enjoyed staying up until midnight watching highlights of this year's Open and have already set the DVR for the 1996 & 2005 Masters and 2006 British, I think there is really only one way to pay tribute to the greatest athlete of my generation on his 33rd birthday...

Now, how about them Hoos?!
I didn't get to watch the game live on Sunday because it was not carried by a major station here in the heart of Cavalier Country, but staring at the ESPN.com GameCast on a 30 second loop made me feel like I was there. Thankfully, Comcast SportsNet was kind enough to re-broadcast the game at 1:30 am, which once again proved that I could never go back to life before DVR. Comcast was also nice enough to cut out the first 7 minutes of the second half to squeeze OT in the scheduled 2 hour broadcast block. Considering the 14-7 run the Jackets went on out of the break, I'm glad I missed it.

It had been ten years since my last Godwin-Freeman game, but not much has changed. From the kid in the front row dressed in flashing Christmas lights to the entire Godwin student section dressed in black, there is no better atmosphere than the inside of 1,500 person gym for a great high school basketball rivalry game.
Freeman ran away with a 15 point win and look poised to be one of the best two teams in the region along with John Marshall. The head-to-head match ups between the two Colonial District foes on Jan. 6th and Feb. 6th could be the two most entertaining games in the area this season.
Tip-Off

Only four days after the Daily Progress' update on how Sean Singletary is adjusting to a larger role in Phoenix, he is on the move again.
It makes sense that Sean's fourth stop in the League would be in Charlotte as the Bobcats continue to collect as many college All-Americans as possible. Clearly, MJ has an unhealthy love of former 1st Team All-ACC'ers.

After two rounds of the Pacquiao - De La Hoya fight Saturday night, I turned to the guy next to me and said, "how awesome would a Pacquiao - Mayweather fight be?!"
If this works out, this could be a boxing event of a caliber the sport has not seen in years. Here's hoping!

Al Groh is really not worthy of a Godfather reference, but this is funny regardless:
UVA's Al Groh Is Icy, Son

Nepotism in college football may still be a problem, but not at UVA.
Facing staff evaluation after a 104th ranked offense limped into the offseason, Al Groh decided to fire his offensive coordinator for poor performance. Is this a big deal? Of course, as your offensive coordinator in college is heavily involved in convincing certain players to come to your school in addition to their responsibilities getting the team to score points. Firing offensive staff is always a big deal, and if you doubt this, ask the suddenly very available Tommy Tuberville about the matter.
Is this a BIG deal? Double yes, when the guy you're firing is your very own son. Mike Groh, son of Al Groh, is being fired by his dad from the University of Virginia after dismal results as the play-caller for the Cavaliers. I can only imagine that the whole thing happened Fredo-style, with Groh looking quietly out on the lake while his henchmen took Mike out in the canoe to "have a little talk."
If you doubt that Al Groh is gangsta, well, you know now. He's icy and you better have his money, or it's dirt nap time for you -- even if you happen to be flesh and blood.

It will never happen, but I hope Craig is doing everything he can to gauge Tommy Tuberville's interest in re-locating to C-ville.
From Jeff White's blog:
CHARLOTTESVILLE – If you’ve spent any time today reading message boards devoted to U.Va. athletics – those on TheSabre.com and CavsCorner.com in particular – you’re probably convinced that the Al Groh era is over.
And maybe Groh has, indeed, coached his last game at Virginia. But I’ve been digging and calling and digging all day, and none of the many people I’ve spoken to – at least those whom I consider to be reliable sources – believes a final decision has been made on Groh, whose eighth season as Virginia’s football coach ended last weekend with a 17-14 loss to Virginia Tech.
I have learned, however, that U.Va.’s board of visitors has told athletic-department officials that they may borrow money from the school to pay for Groh’s buyout if they decide a change is required.
Under the terms of Groh’s contract, U.Va. would owe him about $6 million if it fired him before next season.
In an e-mail exchange with me Nov. 9 – the day after U.Va.’s loss at Wake Forest—athletic director Craig Littlepage was unequivocal when I asked him about the 2009 football season.
“Al Groh will be our head coach,“ Littlepage said, even if U.Va. lost its final two regular-season games and finished with a losing record.
Which, of course, is what happened. And now, Littlepage’s comments notwithstanding, many people close to the football program no longer seem convinced that Groh will return for a ninth season as coach at his alma mater.
About 28 hours after U.Va. lost in Blacksburg to finish 5-7 for the second time in three years. Littlepage announced Sunday night that Groh’s contract would not be extended through Dec. 31, 2012. Littlepage also said in his statement that he’d be meeting with Groh “in the next 48 hours to conduct a year-review of the football program.“
One of the issues to be discussed was offensive coordinator Mike Groh’s future on his father’s staff. How those meetings have gone, I can’t say for sure, but various Internet reports suggest the two parties remain far apart. Littlepage e-mailed me tonight to decline comment, and Al Groh didn’t respond to an e-mail I sent him seeking comment.
