Hooray for UVA byes & Week 12 Picks
Nov 13, 2008
Honestly, I’ve done my best to stay upbeat about ACC football, but the truth is I really can’t take much more of this.
I love college football. I will watch just about anything related to the subject. But you have to be delusional (or trying to attract a national audience for Thursday Night Football) to believe what is happening on a weekly basis in this conference is in the least bit compelling.
I admit when Wake finally put UVA out of its misery last weekend my emotional connection was severed, but in all seriousness, I was somewhat thankful. In fact, it was becoming tiresome to root for a team to be just good enough to beat enough other middle-of-the-road teams to get to the conference championship.
(Sidebar: Can you even call what will take place in Tampa in a few weeks a “championship”? What champion in college football has ever had a conference winning percentage below 70%? And while we’re on the subject, how does it make any sense that the winner of that game is guaranteed a spot in a BCS bowl in which they will be double digit underdogs (note: take the points) when an undefeated team like Ball State plays in a game with a payout half the size?)
My problem is that like many other fans of this league, I have spent as much time hoping other teams will lose as rooting for my own to win. A bit unsatisfying to say the least.
It’s insane to equate mediocrity with competitiveness. So until one or more teams can establish themselves as consistently dominant and win more that eight games, the ACC will continue to wallow in its own tediousness.
That said, let’s go Canes.
