This is without question my favorite week of the year.
You can keep the NFL Playoffs, the World Series, and even March Madness. I'll take Augusta National everytime.

It appears Dave's days are over in C-ville.
I can't believe he was given less time than Pete Gillen, but with Blake Griffen & Eric Maynor moving on, Mr. Littlepage must feel this is his shot to make the big time hire he missed out on when he made a run at Tubby Smith 4 years ago.

Throughout the day, we will hear from lifelong Redskins fans (and a few other people) as they "celebrate" another year of off-season domination:

Previous posts inside...
Gersh from wherever he is in the world today -
Haynesworth is Stubblefield is Jason Taylor is Adam Archuleta is Deion Sanders is Jeff George is all why i was glad to be able to watch replays of Redskins games on Monday mornings in Hong Kong last season. My weekend wasn't ruined once. By signing Haynesworth, I may finally have to institute my "no giving up Sunday for the Redskins until they are leading the division or close to it by week 8" policy.
Carlson from NYC -
Memo to Dan Snyder:
Americans are spending less and saving more. This applies to businesses as well.
This news excites me, only because I recently rejected a seat license at FedEx Field. These despicable and gross signings validate my painful decision. I had been waiting for those seats since 1993.
46East from The Fan -
I just woke up to this barrage of Redskins B.S. I really am speechless. I dont know what to do anymore. How can i root for a new team?
There really isn't any way to ever feel excited about another franchise, but with Snyder & Cerrato running the show, I dont see how this is ever going to change. I hate, hate, hate every move we make. I can't wait for the draft next month with our big 4 freakin picks.
Beef from B-more -
Umm, guess again if you think we'll have enough money to sign a 1st round pick. Trade city.
One good thing about signing Haynesworth is the demonstrated commitment to go the extra mile to punish Cowboys.
Britton from Chi-Town (editor's note: Pats Fan 2nd editor's note: Fred Taylor to the Pats may be the most underrated pick-up of free agency) -
You would think over the last 10 years of owning the Redskins that Dan Snyder would have learned from his past mistakes. He has thrown a ridiculous amount of money at players with checkered pasts and one-year wonders. You would think he would look around the league and see the success that other teams have had and ask himself how they went about doing it? Let's look at a couple of examples:
Miami: Turned a 1 win team into a playoff team. How? By hiring great executives and investing in the draft.
Atlanta: Turned a PR nightmare into a playoff team by drafting a franchise QB and hiring a new GM from a brilliant front office in New England.
Lesson: It starts in the front office and investing in the draft. Snyder has been the epitome of doing neither.
Now I must say this, Haynesworth is neither a one-year wonder nor a player with a significant checkered past. He is the best defensive tackle of the last decade. I think this move could be justified if the Redskins were one player away from making the playoffs, but they are not. They need a lot more than a stud DT and you can start with the quarterback.
I'm excited to hear about how happy all the Redskins fans are about how this year they are making the playoffs and have the potential to win a Super Bowl. They act this way every year. Over confident college football fans from the ACC who think they understand the NFL and believe paying guys like Brandon Lloyd $10 million bucks will lead them to the promised land!! It's pure comedy!
I look forward to Week 3 when the their $54 million dollar man DeAngelo Hall is either on the bench because he has lost his starting position to a practice squad player or is locked up in jail for assaulting a patron at the local strip club joint who was looking at 'his girl' the wrong way!
G-Unit from ATL (editor's note: Jets fan) -
What blows my mind is the fact that meangelo has been given $46 mil ($24 from Raiders and $22 from Skins) guaranteed in the last year. 8 games for the raiders and like 5 games with the Skins. His agent is a god! Wow.

After suffering through the Bruce Smith era and in light of DeAngelo Hall's impending massive deal, I think Dan Snyder owes me.
I've put up with enough Hokies over the years. It's about time the Skins do me a solid and finally make room on the roster for a Cavalier...or two!

Virginia football got it's first commitment yesterday for the 2010 recruiting class.
So I guess we got that going for us...which is nice.

Fast is not the adjective that first comes to mind when I think about Cedric Peerman, but apparently it should be:
02/22/09 - RB Cedric Peerman led all running backs with a 4.45 in the 40 in official electronic times posted Sunday. He was second with a 40.0-inch vertical jump and fourth among the position group with 27 reps at 225 pounds.
Nod to Kelly for the update.

Daily Progress Slide Show
As several people have pointed out recently, I have been a bit off my blogging game. You would think the implosion of UVA basketball over the course of an 8 game losing streak would incite action, but mostly, it just depressed me to the point of disinterest.
After the removal of the team's schedule from my cubicle in mid-January (a sad and unceremonious event in my life), I checked in on the team only on the off chance I came across a game on weekend afternoons. I happened to see signs of improvement in the first half in Chapel Hill, but when you're taking your seventh straight defeat, first half improvement does little to ease the overall feeling of suck.
Two weeks later, I was predictably on my couch on Sunday morning and stumbled into the Clemson game. Despite efforts in the second half to further crush the souls of fans across the Commonwealth, the Hoos survived. It was a pleasant upset made all the more satisfying by the post-game texts to E-Dubs.
But despite the Tigers ranking, Sunday’s win pales in comparison to last night’s. For the first time in 2009, I was looking forward to a UVA game. I was just hoping to see the Cavs avoid the longest losing streak to the Hokies since the 60’s. Instead, I spent the entire game asking myself what team I was watching and wondering where an all-around performance like that came from.
Whatever it was, if the team on the floor last night shows up the rest of the season, we may see a similar performance down the stretch by the Hoos bball team as by the Hoos football team only the complete opposite.
Perfectly happy with a two-game ACC win streak, I turned my post-Hoos attention to the Caps just in time to see the best sports franchise in D.C. beat Montreal in a shootout. Though I missed it live, Ovie’s first period goal is a must watch…the dude is unreal.
Throw in highlights from Eric Maynor’s 30 point effort to lead VCU to the top of the CAA and an internet update on Freeman advancing to the district finals rematch with Travis McKie and John Marshall and it was the best of sports night at the Bald household in quite a while.

From a mass e-mail that went out this morning:
The University of Virginia has some of the most loyal and generous fans of any school in the country and we are extremely appreciative of that support. You have made significant investments in our program and I recognize that you expect results. As the Athletics Director I expect results as well.
I realize that many fans are frustrated and I want to make sure you know that I am frustrated as well. You should also know that I am committed to making sure we are the very best we can be in each of our 25 programs. Many of our programs have performed extremely well over the past several years, while others need our attention and support. Improvements in football and men's basketball are a priority. All of our programs will continue to receive the support they need. The programs that need to improve will be given the proper focus and attention.
Like you, I expect us to win our in-state battles, and to compete for ACC and national championships. This was part of our plan several years ago when we stated publicly that we wanted to be a top ten program consistently in the Directors Cup standings. We remain committed to building a program that will finish in the top ten on a consistent basis.
You have my commitment that I will do everything needed to get all of our programs on track. The intended results are for our student-athletes and teams to have high levels of achievement, academically and athletically, while contributing to the quality of the University community.

Director of Athletics

Mel's first round mock draft is up this morning.
Two immediate thoughts come to mind:
1. There is no way the Redskins braintrust is smart enough to pick Orakpo.
2. I hope Morgan Moses notices that OLU has another trenchman in the top 10...congrats to Mean Gene!
