So, I just recently stumbled across a website that I found to be quite interesting. I use the word interesting to describe the site due to my lack of a better word at the moment. You have to understand that I’m still feeling a little dumbfounded by my experience with the site. I introduce all of you that may not be familiar with www.smosh.com. Unsure of the meaning of the word smosh, I immediately hit the online Wikipedia. This is what I discovered. Smosh is a duo of college students, Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox from Carmichael, California. They write, film, act in and edit their own skits and “music videos”. As of December 2007, they have over 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. [1] “Pokemon Theme” is Smosh’s most famous video. In June 2007, the video was removed due to a copyright claim by Shogakukan. The video received 24,732,537 views before its removal.[2] The video can still be found on smosh.com. I suddenly found myself intrigued and decided to goole Smosh to see what else I could find. To my surprise, these two young men have been featured in publications such as Time Magazine. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. The website’s success was due to idiotic videos put together by Padilla and Hecox…end of story. How could something that simple be so popular? I was just waiting to read about the millions of dollars that two guys were rolling around in, but to my disbelief, the financial situation of Padilla and Hecox is the opposite. Although the website proves itself to be genius when it comes to obtaining popularity votes; I would be lying if I said I loved the videos. Will I ever return to the site? Yes. Everyone could use a little stupid in their life!!!!! Check out the website for yourself: www.smosh.com Here’s Ian and Anthony give directions on a new contest their holding: And here’s an entry: Movie to See: Persepolis

If you’re a fan of black and white movies or animated movies or historically-baed movies or coming of age story movies or movies based on graphic novels…well, you get the idea. If you’re a fan of movies, period, you should see Persepolis. I only just started reading the graphic novel compilation that the film is based on last week, but it was immediately engrossing. The movie is just as fascinating. Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical story of growing up in pre-revolutionary Iran and then under the repressive fundamentalist regime, is softened by her intelligent and politically active parents who expose her to the smart set of activists and thinkers in Iran at the time. We see how tough it was to be a teenager craving Western music (Bee Gees? Pink Floyd? Iron Maiden!) which was only sold on the black market in Iran…how difficult it was to accept the law requiring females to wear a veil in public. But comply they did. Her parents sent her to high school in Vienna to protect her from the dangers of staying, but she finds it hard to fit in. When she returns to Iran, she has just as many problems re-acclimating to the repression. Luckily, Satrapi’s brilliantly simple graphic illustrations have been maintained in the movie, mainly due to her hands-on involvement in the film’s production. She is a master with her drawings; they are amazingly simple and powerful at the same time. This is true animation without special affects and it’s brilliant. And, yes, the movie offers a history lesson for those not well schooled in foreign history, but it’s done in the most compelling way. (The British Empire assuring the new Shah that they’ll handle all the details to put him in power. “What do we do?“ asks the Shah. “Just give us all your oil,“ the Brits assure him.) But don’t believe me. See this movie…it’ll grab you one way or another. Jazz Fighting

So i was at the Richmond Jazz Society’s monthly performance (this month at Emilio’s) last week and the roving photographer who always documents these shows stopped by to share a great story. Seems he was walking around the room that night taking shots of random people, like he does during every Jazz Society event and some guy went off on him. Unbelievably, the irate man pulled him into the men’s room and started screaming at the photog about not taking his picture any more. Now, this photographer is a very nice and unassuming sort of guy and he assured the crazy man that if he didn’t want his picture taken, all he had to do was say so. But apparently, wacko was upset that his picture had been taken at last month’s event. (Note to newbies: The Jazz Society posts dozens of photos from these events on their website each month…so don’t go with anyone with whom you wouldn’t want your picture taken and put online). The photographer apologized, but that apparently wasn’t enough so the crazy man starts choking him. Not knowing what else to do, the photoman starts beating his arms on the men’s room door to alert the crowd that he’s being assaulted behind closed doors. We could hear the banging even over the band’s playing, so you know it was loud. Fortunately, someone swooped in and grabbed the nutcase and removed him to the street. I don’t know about you, but that seemed like a quintessential jazz story to me. You think he’s on some wanted list? Or maybe he was just there with someone else’s girlfriend…or boyfriend? Cooool… Nashville is Richmond 2.0

So I’m sure all of you were are like “whats up with Corey not having any friday randomness?!“. I know you guys live for that stuff, but are just too afraid to say it. It’s chill. Well, I had decided to take a little road trip to visit some friends in Nashville and can I just say it’s the alternate universe version of Richmond. We have Carytown….They have “Hillsboro Village”...We have Need Supply….They have Posh….We have Broad St….They have Broadway…...We have Oregon Hill…They have East Nashville….We have Empire…..They have FooBar…We have Ipanema….They have Jackson’s….you get the idea. Nontheless not as country music as one might think. If I could sum up my nashville trip, it would be with this little piece of yummy random youtube goodness. Happy Presidents day.

I know not the most original headline but it’s the end of the day and I’m tired. Sue me. We talked with Noah Scalin a few weeks ago about Shop RVA; project a few of his students at VCU started (WWW.SHOPRVA.COM) , now he’s making a skull-a-day for the next year…he was ETSY’s visiting artist in New York. www.etsy.com |

As if Plan 9 didn’t suck out enough of my money, now they constantly have to have amazing musicians playing in-store performances. Now every time I see a performance, I get suckered into buying the artist’s album. And by suckered, I mean liking the music enough to support the artist. That’s added to the 2 or 3 CDs I’m already planning on buying while I’m there.
