Hide and Seek

While reading and meditating on Psalm 139 today, I was reminded of one of my favorite childhood games; hide and seek. My siblings and I would hide behind clothes in the closet, under beds, in the hollow of the giant oak tree in the yard, in the wheat fields, and anywhere else we thought it would be difficult to find us. I recall with delight my own squeals of surprise each time my sister or brothers found me.
The psalmist poses a series of situations that reflect the absurdity of even trying to hide from an omnipresent, omniscient God, for He is everywhere. As my cousin says, “There is no spot where God is not!” Isn’t that reassuring?
Just as I knew my siblings would eventually find me, I have the same assurance today that no matter where I am, what I’m doing, or what I am going through, God is ever present. Now, isn’t that reassuring? In the words of the gospel song, “There’s No Hiding Place Down Here.”
