Whole
The Whole Life blog is a place to find stories about faith journeys, ponder the thoughts of selected leaders throughout the interfaith community, and explore ideas about how we inspire one another and connect. The name suggests two ways of thinking: That we are ever seeking those things that lift our spirits, help heal us and make our days a little brighter. And that our reach is inclusive, gathering all who are open to good will across cultures, religions and personal philosophies. After all, we are one world, one people.

Strangers and Angels

Strangers and Angels

Another week, and another adventure story to share. I’ve asked the Lord to send the stories, but I wasn’t expecting them to be quite this dramatic. Seriously though, this week’s story also speaks of the faithfulness and favor of God. Last Thursday, (Juneteenth) as I was traveling from Atlanta, Georgia to Tampa, Florida, I sat beside a man who turned out to be one of many angels the Lord sent that afternoon. He was going to visit his mom for her birthday, and I was accompanying my surrogate daughter to the Black Writers Reunion and Conference. About a half hour into the flight, I experienced sudden, excruciating pain in my right foot. At first I thought it was a cramp, but the pain continued to intensify. This complete stranger, my flight angel, took my foot in his hands and massaged it until the flight attendant brought an ice pack. Then he helped me off the plane, for by this time I couldn’t put any pressure on the foot.

When I arrived at the hotel, God has positioned another set of angels to assist me; among them a van driver who had just graduated from medical school! That strong young man picked me up like I was a rag doll, sat me in a wheel chair, and rolled me to the entrance of Tampa General Hospital so that I would not have to walk a step!

I encountered more angels in the ER who tried to expedite my care, because by then I couldn’t move my toes. These angels could sense that the pain was unbearable. Tests to rule out a blood clot and fracture were performed.  Both were negative. It was determined that I was bitten by a spider. Do I believe in angels? You bet. Within one week (you remember the deer story that happened on Father’s Day) God dispatched His angels to protect and comfort me. They were complete strangers with hearts of gold!

Thanks for your post. It’s a reminder that God is never far, and that often He expects those of us who walk the earth - His earthly vessels - to operate on His behalf. You’re an angel too - so it’s only fitting that you received the best of care from others.
