Rebels’ Wards go stride for stride
Identical twins Alec and Kyle Ward share the same hair, eyes, nose, voice . . . and, most definitely, the will to win. Imagine a kid that just won’t quit. Now, double that vision.
Sound the alarm
As a volunteer fireman, Michael van Reekum appreciates the value of getting somewhere fast. He has flashed that same four-alarm speed, chasing down quarterbacks for Collegiate’s Cougars.

High school football summaries
Here are summaries of Monday night’s four AAA Central Region high school football playoff games. DIVISION 6 MEADOWBROOK 27, L.C. BIRD 14 A brawl that erupted with 20 seconds left and lasted about five minutes despite efforts by game officials, school officials and coaches to stop it marred the Meadowbrook-Bird high school playoff game.
Hawks closer to crown
The Hanover High Hawks didn’t talk about defending their Central Region, Division 5 championship the past week. That topic was off-limits - until now. Second-seeded Hanover scored 10 points before its game with Monacan was four minutes old and went on to a 24-14 victory in the region semifinals in high school’s version of Monday Night Football.
Blue Devils win 21-20 over Hermitage
It was overtime, and the Varina Blue Devils were almost out of chances. In the Central Region, Division 6 semifinal last night, they trailed visiting Hermitage 20-14, and everything they’d worked for—the game, the undefeated season, and, yes, the dream—was on the line. The noise in the stadium was deafening. The tension was thick in the frigid air.
Morgan, Generals oust Rebels
Dinwiddie quarterback Adam Morgan knew this season wouldn’t end like the last one. Douglas Freeman shut down the Generals’ opening possession in the Central Region Division 5 semifinals. In three plays, the Rebels pushed the powerful Dinwiddie offense back 4 yards and poked the ball loose from Morgan. After taking over at the Dinwiddie 31-yard line, the Rebels needed just four more plays for senior Robby Blanchard to find the end zone on a 14-yard run.
Monarchs win 27-14 over host L.C. Bird
Now you can add a new way that Meadowbrook’s Desmond Coble subdues his football opponents. Normally, the junior quarterback excels offensively with his feet and his arm. Last night, it was his ability on defense that made the biggest difference in a MHS comeback from 14 points down. Coble’s interception and zig-zagging 65-yard touchdown return with 1:32 to go led to the Monarchs’ 27-14 win over host L.C. Bird in the Central Region Division 6 semifinals.

Area high school football playoff scores:
Powhatan races to victory
Vance Hendren crossed the goal line with the clinching touchdown in Powhatan’s 27-17 victory over Tabb of Yorktown in the semifinals of the Region I, Division 4 playoffs last night.
Hawks surge past Bulldogs
The Gretna Hawks averaged more than 40 points this season on their way to a 9-1 record and the top seed in the Group A, Region B, Division 2 state playoffs. But last night, the fourth-seeded Goochland Bulldogs were able to keep the Hawks’ potent offense under wraps—for the first half, anyway. Gretna had just two possessions and ran a total of 13 plays in the opening 24 minutes, and took a precarious 7-0 lead into the intermission.
Penalties, errors sink Cumberland
Big plays and bruising running led to Buffalo Gap’s 46-12 win over Cumberland High School during last night’s Region B semifinal football playoff game.
3 plays change game
POWHATAN—Three plays. Three big offensive plays. That, in a nutshell, was the story of the North Cross Raiders’ 21-6 victory over Blessed Sacrament Huguenot last night in the VIS Division 3 championship game. “We knew coming in that they had two big-time playmakers,“ said Knights’ coach Mike Henderson. “I thought for 98 percent of the game we did a pretty good job shutting them down.
Central Region playoffs put off
The eight teams competing in the Central Region football playoffs will have a couple more days to wait before deciding which ones reach the finals. The forecast of rain, possibly heavy about kickoff time, led to the postponement of the four games. Hermitage was scheduled to play at Varina and Meadowbrook at L.C. Bird in Division 6. Douglas Freeman was traveling to Dinwiddie, and Monacan was on the road at Hanover in Division 5.

4 football playoffs canceled because of rain
Tonight’s rainy weather forecast caused the postponement of the four Central Region football playoff games. Hermitage was scheduled to play at Varina and Meadowbrook at L.C. Bird in Division 6. Douglas Freeman was traveling to Dinwiddie, and Monacan was on the road at Hanover in Division 5. The games will be played Monday at 7 p.m. The region championship games scheduled next Friday have been moved to Saturday, Nov. 22.
Rematches are the name of the game in Div. 6 playoffs
Your place or mine? The standard pickup line is the standard playoff line for the L.C. Bird and Meadowbrook football teams in the Central Region, Division 6 playoffs. The Skyhawks (9-1) and Monarchs (8-2) hook up in the postseason for the third time in four years tonight at 7:30 at L.C. Bird in what could be some nasty weather.
Indians look to advance
The Powhatan Indians football team is used to seeing postseason opponents from the Bay Rivers District. Usually, it’s Lafayette, although Grafton and Smithfield are on the list.
Central Region wash out
VIRGINIA BEACH - Rain fell on Thomas Dale’s parade in the opening quarterfinal of the Virginia High School League Group AAA field hockey tournament yesterday at the U.S. National Training Center. Then, a deluge stopped the Maggie Walker Governor’s School-Lake Braddock game in the first half of the second quarterfinal. “It was pouring so hard we had a delay in the game. There was at least an inch of water on the turf,“ Maggie Walker coach Paige Hawkins said. “Seriously, the ball would not move there was so much water.“
Knights, Wildcats put it all on line
Thomas Dale’s players filed off the court quickly, expressing frustration at not being able to play as well as they would have liked.
Knights face expected obstacle
Following Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s victory over North Cross in late August, football coach Mike Henderson said he had an inkling that if things fell into place, the Knights and Raiders would meet again in the playoffs.
Monacan facing another road test
As Monacan coach Danny Parsons loads up his team for a Central Region, Division 5 semifinal game at Hanover, he’s hoping the same bus ride as a year ago will end in a different destination. Last year, Hanover was preparing for its first playoff appearance in school history. The program was in its fifth year and facing Monacan in the first round of the Central Region, Division 5 tournament. The Hawks went on to win the game - 30-0 - and the region.
