Long runs were not part of the regimen for women’s winner. Practice, it is often said, makes perfect. Except where Kristin Price is concerned. Price won the women’s portion of yesterday’s SunTrust Richmond Marathon despite a training regimen that was as spontaneous as it was unique. “I didn’t do any long runs” while preparing, said Price, a 26-year-old resident of Raleigh, N.C. Coming to Richmond at all, she said, “was kind of a spur of the moment thing. I like it that way, to tell you the truth. If I plan too far in advance and work too hard to get ready - who knows? I might get hurt.“

Leaving no doubt. Misgivings accompanied Jynocel Basweti to the starting line of the 31st SunTrust Richmond Marathon. All had been banished by the time Basweti reached the finish line in Shockoe Slip. Basweti outran his doubts to win yesterday’s 26.2-mile race in impressive fashion. He finished in 2:22:22—2½ minutes faster than second-place finisher Mohamed Awol, last year’s champion; and 5½ minutes faster than third-place finisher David Cheromei, last year’s runner-up.

Neither rain nor wind nor gloom of early morning delayed Robert Letting or Jane Murage from the swift completion of the nTelos 8K road race. Letting, a 24-year-old Kenyan, won yesterday’s men’s competition in 22:42. He finished 17 seconds, roughly a full city block, in front of his closest pursuer. Letting, who trains in Albuquerque, N.M., said he found the damp and unseasonably balmy conditions more than a bit unpleasant. “I thought it was warm and I thought it was humid,“ Letting said. “I was worried about the humidity, especially. I drank a lot of water” as the race unfolded.

Never mind the overcast skies and slick streets. Ethiopian runners Derese Deniboba and Alemtsehay Misganaw found Richmond to be as enjoyable yesterday as Hartford, Conn., had been for them last month. The first McDonald’s Half Marathon produced a dramatic climax. About 8:35 a.m., spectators gathered near the finish line at 9th and Cary streets, looked west and saw, racing together down Cary, three runners - Deniboba, Elijah Kitur and Tasfaye Girma. Watching the trio approach was Abiyot Endale, who had faith in his best friend’s closing kick. Sure enough, with about 100 meters to go, Deniboba shed Kitur and Girma and sprinted to the tape to win in 1 hour, 6 minutes and 50 seconds.

There would be no photo finish at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon this year. Jynocel Basweti made certain of that. Basweti, a 21-year-old Kenyan, won this morning’s 31st rendition of the local race with a commanding performance on a windy and unseasonably humid day. His time of 2:22:22 was 2½ minutes faster than that of second-place finisher Mohamed Awol of Ethiopia, last year’s champion; and 5½ minutes faster than that of third-place finisher David Cheromei, last year’s runnerup. Awol defeated Cheromei by one-tenth of a second in last year’s sprint to the finish.

Like 2007, marathon favorites could take race right to the tape. Has David Cheromei gained a step? Has Mohamed Awol lost one? Those questions will be answered, quite possibly in dramatic fashion, shortly after 10:15 this morning at the finish line of the 31st SunTrust Richmond Marathon. Awol and Cheromei, who a year ago delivered the closest finish in the race’s history, are the co-favorites in this year’s 26.2-mile competition. Awol, a 30-year-old Ethiopian, won last year by a wafer-thin margin after surviving a 200-yard sprint to the finish. He and Cheromei finished with identical times (2:20:20). So inseparable were the two as they approached the line that Cheromei may have cost himself a victory by leaping to reach the tape while still a stride and a half away.

Who says winning is the only thing? Certainly not Barry Roberts, the competitor who finished last in the 2007 SunTrust Richmond Marathon. Roberts, a 55-year-old from Norfolk, said last year’s race, his first 26.2-mile endeavor, was special for the most basic of reasons: pride. “People said, ‘Why in the world are you doing this?‘“ Roberts said. “I said, ‘Because I want to.
